Home Coloring Tips
You can get really results with the new home-coloring products. They have become so easy to use that they’re practically fool proof, and ever so natural-looking.

  • Deep condition before you color
  • Wait two days after shampooing before coloring. The color will adhere better, since your scalp is more sensitive after shampooing, it will make the process more comfortable. Plus the natural oils in your hair will protect it.

Long Hair Care Tips

  • Try to avoid sleeping with very tight braids or pony tails. The tightness and the stress can cause breakage and even hair loss.
  • If your hair is braided or has a pony tail, try to use a specially treated band or scrunchie which can help prevent the breakage. Limit your use on clips, bows and untreated bands.
  • If you plan on growing your hair out more, it is advisable that you trim your hair every 3 months to prevent split ends from breaking the hair.
  • Brushing your hair is important because it helps spread the hair’s natural oils. When brushing use long strokes starting from the roots. Stroke your hand over your hair after you are done brushing to get rid of static.
  • When drying your hair, don’t rub with a towel. Instead, blot the water out of your hair. Rubbing can cause tangles.
  • When detangling your hair, work your way up from the tips of your hair and up to the hair roots. Read the rest of this entry »

A New Year, A New You 2009

It’s about time to close the door on 2008. Hard to believe, isn’t it? This past year has been wild politically, economically and – perhaps – even personally. Chances are that there will be many things out of your control in 2009 too, but there are some promises you can make to yourself. Consider the following pledges.

A New Year, A New You

2009 A New Year, A New You

I promise to honestly evaluate my budget by:

  • Looking realistically at the numbers and paying off credit card debt.
  • Taking advantage of coupons and deals offered by businesses such as Salon Trendz in Chicago, which provides free bang trims between regular haircuts for loyal customers.
  • Cutting back on unnecessary spending. (Try bringing coffee from home instead of making the daily pilgrimage to the local cafe.)
  • Visiting the vintage clothes boutique to supplement the wardrobe.

I promise to expand my horizons by:

  • Trying something new such as learning how to swing dance or taking a cooking class.
  • Getting a makeover – anything from Japanese hair straightening to getting pretty highlights added to your hair. If you haven’t ever tried brow threading, Salon Trendz offers a $15 special for first-timers.
  • Paying attention to current events and starting discussions with others.
  • Reading at least three books on the best-seller list.

10 things that can rob you of your beauty rest

Most little girls go through a phase when they want to grow up to be princesses…and why shouldn’t they?

Jasmine and Ariel are smart and funny. Cinderella and Snow White are problem-solvers and aren’t afraid of work. Pocahontas and Mulan are always up for adventure. Those are all great attributes, of course, but when you ask a little girl why she loves her favorite princess, nine times out of 10 she’ll say, “…Because she’s so pretty.”

Princess Aurora was beautiful too, and her “power nap” may have been instrumental in her good looks. Aurora, the one and only Sleeping Beauty, had plenty of time to reap the benefits of enough shut-eye – a crucial component of looking your best.

Makeup Tips get an A+

School has started and students everywhere are trying to adjust to their new schedules. Night owls have to

revert to earlier bed times or else risk sleeping through their alarms. College co-eds jostle for mirror time in dorm restrooms, wielding all sorts of menacing items to get them ready in time for class – sizzling curling irons, mascara wands, hairspray, blow-dryers, and flatirons hot enough to fry an egg.

Soon, the smart girls realize something’s gotta give. Campus life and hours spent on hair and makeup just don’t mesh. Morning makeup application will need to be cut down to a five-minute beauty blitz, and they’ll learn to either wear their hair “au naturel” to classes or shove it under a ball cap, emblazoned with the school logo. For the really smart gals, a third option comes to mind: a semi-permanent cure for the unruly mess – an appointment at a hair salon to get Japanese hair straightening.

A Makeover is the Perfect Birthday Gift

Your best friend has a big birthday coming up, so it’s time to think of a good gift idea. In the past, a book or pretty candle would do, but this year you want it to be something really good – something really perfect.

Makeup Birthday Gift

Makeover Birthday Gift

Why not give her a makeover? She adores those talk shows where audience members get picked randomly to spend some time with a makeup artist and a hair professional. That’s the first page she flips to when she picks up a magazine, too. You’ve heard her say, “I wish that were me” so many times! Why not make her secret wish come true?

You could get her a gift certificate to get her hair cut…or to make it really spectacular, go in with a few of your other gal pals and give the birthday girl “the works.” Find a spa or salon that knows how to pamper someone and give her the royal treatment. Then head out for a night on the town to help her celebrate.

Salon Trendz in Chicago, for instance, could put together a package for your friend with the following services: Read the rest of this entry »

Japanese Hair Straightening: It takes time to save time

It’s going to take how long to get your hair straightened?” asks her boyfriend.

Japanese hair straightening saves time

Japanese hair straightening saves time

To the uninitiated, that’s a common question when first hearing how long an appointment takes for Japanese hair straightening. The thermal hair straightening technique does take several hours to go through the process, but in the long run it’s a great time saver.

Just tell that boyfriend, “It takes time to save time!” Then, remind him that’s a quote attributed to Chicago Bears’ Joe Taylor.

To do Japanese hair straightening correctly, a hair styling team has to go through numerous steps, involving washings and application of a special solution to alter the hair’s molecular structure so that waves and kinks relax. Then the hair is rinsed, heated and styled until the maximum straightness is ensured. It takes a couple of hours, but then most women are done for the next nine to 12 months, although those with very curly hair may need a touchup at the roots.
