It’s about time to close the door on 2008. Hard to believe, isn’t it? This past year has been wild politically, economically and – perhaps – even personally. Chances are that there will be many things out of your control in 2009 too, but there are some promises you can make to yourself. Consider the following pledges.

2009 A New Year, A New You
I promise to honestly evaluate my budget by:
- Looking realistically at the numbers and paying off credit card debt.
- Taking advantage of coupons and deals offered by businesses such as Salon Trendz in Chicago, which provides free bang trims between regular haircuts for loyal customers.
- Cutting back on unnecessary spending. (Try bringing coffee from home instead of making the daily pilgrimage to the local cafe.)
- Visiting the vintage clothes boutique to supplement the wardrobe.
I promise to expand my horizons by:
- Trying something new such as learning how to swing dance or taking a cooking class.
- Getting a makeover – anything from Japanese hair straightening to getting pretty highlights added to your hair. If you haven’t ever tried brow threading, Salon Trendz offers a $15 special for first-timers.
- Paying attention to current events and starting discussions with others.
- Reading at least three books on the best-seller list.
I promise to optimize my physical health by:
- Working to reduce stress by taking a stretch-and-relax class, getting a scalp massage, engaging in regular prayer, cutting back on extracurricular activities, or by scheduling counseling sessions if needed.
- Eating more nutritiously – to fuel the body, rather than to anesthetize problems
- Exercising aerobically three to six days a week. (Take your pet to the dog park, go to the gym, or walk to work.)
- Incorporating resistance training (weights) into your week to boost metabolism, fight osteoporosis and improve tone.
I promise to take care of my relationships by:
- Saying “I’m sorry” more often.
- Renewing old friendships by writing letters or making impromptu phone calls.
- Planning practical outings with friends to get a manicure, facial or a new haircut.
- Extending forgiveness more readily.
I promise to make a difference by:
- Finding a place to volunteer such as the humane society or at a fund-raising event
- Picking up trash, taking shorter showers and using cloth grocery bags – anything to help the environment.
- Cleaning out the closet and donating clothing to a homeless shelter.
- Writing a letter to a Congressman or an editorial to the newspaper.
This is just a starter list of resolutions for 2009. Now it’s your turn to customize your own set of promises for the new year. Good luck!
